It is the tenth book of the Khuddaka-nikāya of the Sutta-piṭaka, translation of Jātaka with Commentary (only the poems are part of the canon). It consists of verses embedded in stories of the former births of Gotama Buddha. This book can be generally divided into Three sections. The first section named Ekanipāta covers the first 150 Jātaka stories with an index. The second section named Dukanipāta covers the next 100 Jātaka stories (151–250) and the last section called Tikanipāta covers the next 50 Jātaka stories with an index. The first book, therefore, contains a total of 300 Jātaka stories and focuses on foundational stories that introduce the Buddha’s past lives as humans, animals, and divine beings including many stories, the Bodhisatta cultivated on his path to enlightenment such as the perfection of generosity (dāna pāramī), morality (sīla pāramī), patience (khanti pāramī) and determination (viriya pāramī), etc.
