Translator’s Introduction -- Forfeiture (Nissaggiya) I-XXX -- Expiation (Pācittiya) I-LX.<br/>Summary: The Book of the Discipline, Vol. II is the second volume of Suttavibhanga. It covers Oldenberg's edition of the Vinayapiṭaka, vol. iii, p. 195, to vol. iv, p. 124, and thus comprises the thirty Nissaggiya rules and sixty of the ninety-two Pācittiya rules laid down for monks. According to the translator's introduction, the actual rules, sikkhāpada, of the Pali Pātimokkha are accessible to English readers in Rhys Davids and Oldenberg's translation and translations even earlier. This is the first translation into English of these sikkhāpadas complete with their attendant material. It is divided into three parts. The first part is the introduction, which continues to explore the significance of the Vinaya Pitaka. The second part covers minor offenses such as the thirty kinds of forfeiture (Nissaggiya) and sixty kinds of expiation (Pācittiya) for monks. The third part includes an index within words and subjects, names, some Pali words discussed in the notes and abbreviations used in the notes for easy research. Briefly, this volume expands the disciplinary code to include less severe offenses and introduces the ethical guidelines for monks, marking a significant extension of the monastic framework. |
