Summary: This book, the minor anthologies of the Pali Canon, combines two essential texts from the Khuddakanikāya in the Suttapiṭaka: the Udāna and the Itivuttaka. Translated by F.L. Woodward, with an introduction by Mrs. Rhys Davids, it was first published in 1935 and reprinted in 2003 by the Pali Text Society and it is part of the Sacred Books of the Buddhists series (Vol. 8). Spanning xv, 208 pages, the work presents the Udāna (a collection of the Buddha’s inspired utterances) and the Itivuttaka (a compilation of doctrinal statements introduced by “Thus it was said”) in English, with indexes for easy reference. The Udana, verses of uplift, includes eight chapters: Enlightenment, Mucalinda, Nanda, Meghiya, The elder Sona, Jaccandha, The little chapter, and Pataligama. The Itivuttaka, as it was said, includes four chapters. Indexes are Names in ‘Verses of uplift’, Words and subjects in ‘Verses of uplift’, Names in ‘As it was said’, Words and subjects in ‘As it was said’, Pali words in the notes, and Abbreviations of book-titles in notes.
